"Someone Saved My Life Tonight"

A gal (oh, wait)... a sexy, hot, exotic coworker of mine and I were discussing the lyrics to Elton John's song, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," today and I was so amused by what I learned the song was really about.

According to Elton when he was on Oprah... this is a song about a Elton and a girl (yes, I know) he was dating when he was younger. She got pregnant, and Elton, doing the right thing, committed to marry her. Well apparently she wasn't really pregnant, but was faking the pregnancy so that he would stay with her. His friends found out and told him, and of course, he confronted her and ended the relationship.

I think this is AMUSING. I listened to the song a few times today after hearing the story, and I am honestly captivated by the relief and freedom in the words and music.

Go play it, or sing along if you know it, and let me know if you find it equally entertaining...

When I think of those East End lights, muggy nights
The curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima Donna lord you really should have been there
Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair
And it's one more beer and I don't hear you anymore
We've all gone crazy lately
My friends out there rolling round the basement floor

And someone saved my life tonight sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me didn't you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear

You're a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

I never realised the passing hours of evening showers
A slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams
I'm strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen
It's four o'clock in the morning
Damn it listen to me good
I'm sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music's still alive

And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds
Paying your H.P. demands forever
They're coming in the morning with a truck to take me home
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
So save your strength and run the field you play alone

I know Snay, I'm dumbfounded by that one too. Love Elton, never knew he almost got married...to a woman.

Charissa, "Maybe we'll see you Thurs, Fri or Sat??"-part of the comment you left on my page. What's going on Fri, Sat?

The funny thing is, EJ never wrote his own songs, so he had to convey all those feelings to Bernie Taupin. For a situation so intensely personal, it is very descriptive. He either had to pour his heart out to BT, or BT kind of took his own liberties with the lyrics.
